Training Director at iiaa Tracey Tamaris, explains the safe way to reveal newer, younger looking skin.
Conventional peels work on the principal that if you kill enough epidermal cells, the basal cell layer of keratinocytes grow faster, leading to rejuvenated skin. This is partly based on the misconception that the surface of the skin is made up of “dead” cells which stand in the way of a glowing complexion. The truth is that they are mature, functioning cells and have an important protective effect. Once they are stripped away, immature cells are exposed which are far more vulnerable to damage and photo ageing. They are simply not developed enough to defend skin against the daily onslaught of pollution, UV rays, bacteria and other environmental aggressors. The natural, waterproofing barrier will be disrupted, leading to dull, dry skin caused by TEWL (Trans Epidermal Water Loss). Environ Founder Dr Des Fernandes believes there are better ways to achieve smoother, tighter, healther skin than stripping away vital layers.
Cool Peels
A Safe Effective Approach
The Environ Cool Peel system uses low strength acids that function only on the surface of the skin and are far less aggressive than conventional peels. The lactic acid in the peel lowers the skins pH to a “sweet spot” where the keratinocytes are stressed enough to release growth factors, but not low enough to kill them. These growth factors rejuvenate skin, promote new collagen and elastin, creating a more youthful, thicker, healthier and smoother skin. Lactic acid also has the advantage of promoting natural hydration as well as lightening blemishes and killing bacteria.
WHO SHOULD HAVE A COOL PEEL?
Photo Damage: Clients with photo damage usually have an unnaturally thickened stratum corneum, resulting in skin that feels rough and dry. A course of light Cool Peels will help to remove the excessive build up.
Acne: Acne sufferers tend to have a flaky stratum corneum, the cells combine with sebum to block the hair follicle and cause comedones and pustules. Very mild cool peels can help.
It is important to note that peeling does not help with pigmentation because the DNA damage is rooted in the lower layers where peels cant reach. The epidermis needs to be kept healthy and skin needs to be treated with high levels of Vitamin A, C, niacinamide, antioxidants and peptides. Even if peeling initially appears to lighten pigmentation marks, the chances are they will reappear.
Peels should be part of an ongoing, tailormade skincare regime and not used in isolation. This holistic approach will lead to the most significant changes and ensure a healthy strong beautiful skin for a lifetime.
